Our Japanese sister-school

29/09/2013

During July each year, students and teachers from Otemon Gakuin Elementary School arrive at Holland Park State School for their annual five night homestay. The relationship between the two schools commenced with a visit by two Otemon teachers in 1992. 1995 marked the beginning of the first student homestay visit.

During the school program, the Japanese students engage in a range of activities. They join students in cooking damper and fruit slices, play Aussie Rules during physical education, decorate frames for their photo collections and practise hip-hop moves during AusDance lessons. On a day trip to Lone Pine, the Otemon and our host students travel on board the Mirimar cruise laughing and using a variety of communication techniques before experiencing koalas, a sheep dog show and kangaroo feeding.

The Otemon Gakuin Study Tour is a highlight of the school calendar and the bonds of friendship between the school communities have strengthened with each visit. Holland Park State School students and teachers have visited Otemon, in Japan, biennially since 2001. This study tour includes a five night homestay with families of our Sister School and visits to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Miyajima Island, Kyoto and Osaka.

During September each year staff members from each school are involved in a two week teacher exchange program.
